It’s a part of the GOP mantra to oppose the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) in all its forms. But does that pay off at the local level? I’ve been analyzing governor’s races around the country, and I found a surprise. I wrote about it today for The New Yorker.
Kasich implemented the medicaid expansion on his own if I remember correctly. I’ve heard that if you poll about the individual parts of the ACA, people generally support the different provisions. The least liked is the individual mandate which I think was pushed by the Republicans. It still garners over 50% approval in polls though. The overall rating for the ACA is lower than the sums though thanks to the negative press. Strange how that stuff works.
The ACA Medicaid expansion is free money for your state and turning it down for ideological reasons is idiotic.
I suspect if a liberal governor turned down highway funds because, say, global warming, voters would punish him or her also.
Voters seem more tolerant of idiotic behavior in Congress. Probably because they cannot do much damage individually.
Something is wrong with the file. For instance, KS is at 1 (percent I presume) which is just wrong. Davis is beating Brownback.
You are thinking of the governor’s race.
Sam, where on the site are the estimated probabilities for individual senate races?
Check the front page of the site: https://election.princeton.edu/2014/07/30/jerseyvotes-2/
For the time being, look at the first column of this CSV file. It shows Democratic win probabilities as percentages. A better look should come soon.
Thanks Sam, much appreciated.
I just spotted this article. Very interesting!
Unrelated to this article I suppose, but I just saw this.
Consumer Confidence in U.S. Rises to Almost Seven-Year High
http://www.businessweek.com/news/2014-08-26/consumer-confidence-index-in-u-dot-s-dot-increases-to-92-dot-4-in-august
Now that the plot about Republican Governors paying a price for opposing ACA is showing up all over the internet (congratulations!), let me be all uncool and say that it would be nice if the dots had error bars.
Maine Gov race especially has large uncertainties.
Oh, I was tempted.
