Ideas for the Press in 2017

January 1st, 2017, 3:00pm by Sam Wang

For one of your first reads of the year, here are two excellent pieces by Jay Rosen, NYU journalism professor. In the first piece, he describes the negative prospects for the press in 2017 – many of which are somewhat self-inflicted. However, on the up side, he has a second piece. In it he lists actions that the press can take to do better in 2017. Even if you are not a journalist, please read these – and hold your favorite (or un-favorite) members of the press to these standards.

Trump has not yet DONE anything. Part of his manipulative agenda is to keep the press reporting with top coverage of his mere words. Cover it less and cover Congress, who are starting to do something, more until Trump is actually inaugurated. After that, prioritize his actions over his words.

By the way, if you want to read classic coverage from lower down on the totem pole, go to McClatchy and read the archived coverage from McClatchy (then Knight-Ridder) Washington bureau of George Bush’s invasion of Iraq. All the lies and exaggerations were revealed there in real time, as they happened.

As a perfect example of this, let’s see how the press chooses to cover the House deciding to put the (until now) independent ethics oversight bureau under control of the House-run Ethics Committee. Now that the fox is watching the henhouse, will the press call Congress out on it?

re article 2, Rules for the Press:
Perhaps I’m mistaken as to its relative importance, but Social media makes us all The Press.
Let us hold ourselves, too, to these principals of herding all eyes to the prize.
I’d be honored to friend students of PEC, especially those with ideas how to enlist more U.S. voters, and how to band together to help the poorest and each other.
